If You Already Paid a Tax Relief Company and Nothing Happened, You Are Not Alone

A straight conversation for Wisconsin small business owners who owe taxes

I have had this conversation more times than I would like to count, and it almost always starts the same way. The owner sits down, looks at the floor for a second, and says some version of, “I feel really dumb about this.”

Here is how it usually happened. An IRS notice showed up. Maybe payroll taxes got behind during a slow stretch, or a couple of returns never got filed after the bookkeeper quit. The owner read the letter at nine o’clock at night, could not sleep, and started searching. Within ten minutes of filling out a form online, the phone rang. The person on the other end was friendly, confident, and absolutely certain they could make the whole thing go away. They talked about a program the IRS does not advertise. They needed a card number that day, because enrollment was closing.

So the owner paid. Four thousand dollars, sometimes higher and paying it from an already strained cash flow budget.

And then, nothing. A “case manager” who stopped returning calls. The same intake form, requested twice. A new IRS letter that says exactly what the old one said, except the balance is bigger now because penalty and interest kept running the whole time.

If that is you, I want to tell you two things before we go any further. You are not stupid, and you are far from the only one. And your tax problem is still fixable. It is just going to get fixed the slow, boring, factual way instead of the miracle way.

Why This Works on Smart, Careful People

The companies running these operations are not really selling tax help. They are selling relief from a feeling. Fear and urgency are the product.

You know this better than anyone, because you run a business. When cash is tight and something scary lands in the mailbox, your brain wants the problem to be over more than it wants the problem to be understood. That is human. That is also exactly the moment somebody with a headset and a script is trained to call you.

The tell is not that they sound unprofessional. The good ones sound very professional. The tell is the speed. Real tax resolution starts with reading your file. Nobody can price your outcome before they have seen a single number.

The Red Flags, In Plain Language

“We can settle your debt for pennies on the dollar.” The IRS does have settlement programs, and we have gotten them approved for many clients. But qualifying is a math problem based on your income, your expenses, your assets, and your equity. Anyone who promises a settlement amount before pulling your transcripts and reviewing your financials is guessing, and they know it.

The clock is always about to run out. “This program expires tonight.” “Sign before close of business or you lose your spot.” IRS programs do not expire at midnight because you did not hand over a credit card. Urgency is the sales tool, not the deadline.

A large fee up front, with no written plan. Ask a simple question: what specifically will you do first, and what will you send me when it is done? If the answer is vague, the work will be too.

A promise to stop the IRS cold. I can call the IRS on your behalf, request holds, negotiate, and manage the process, and that genuinely changes outcomes. What nobody can do is make enforcement disappear on command. Anyone who says otherwise is telling you what you want to hear.

No CPA, EA, or attorney you can name. Only those three can represent you before the IRS. If the company will not tell you who is actually signing the power of attorney, or hides everyone behind “your case manager,” that is your answer.

If You Already Paid Somebody, Do These Things This Week

This part matters, because most people freeze here out of embarrassment and lose months. You do not need to feel good about it. You just need to move on from the mistake.

  • Revoke their authority. If you signed a Form 2848 power of attorney, withdraw it so they are no longer standing between you and the IRS.

  • Ask, in writing, for everything in your file and an itemized accounting of what was actually done for your money.

  • Call your credit card company about a chargeback if you paid for work that was never performed. There are time limits, so do this before you do anything else.

  • Get your current IRS transcripts, or have someone pull them for you, so you know exactly where things actually stand today rather than where they stood when you first got scared.

Then stop looking backward. The money is a separate fight. The tax problem is the one still growing.

What Actually Solving Business Tax Debt Looks Like

There is no secret to what we do. It is a sequence, based on knowledge and experience and it works because it is grounded in what the IRS has on file about you.

First, we pull your transcripts. This tells us what the IRS believes you owe, which years are open, which returns are missing, what notices have gone out, and whether enforcement is already in motion. No guessing, no assumptions. Very often the real number is different from the number in the letter that you have received.

Then we look honestly at your finances. Income, expenses, assets, equity, and real cash flow. This determines which options you actually qualify for, rather than which ones sound best on a sales call.

Then I lay out your real choices, which usually include an installment agreement, hardship or currently not collectible status, penalty abatement, an offer in compromise if the math supports one, payroll tax resolution, and a clear picture of your personal exposure as a responsible party. You will hear which ones fit and which ones do not, and why. A real plan based on facts and experience.

Then we do the talking. The calls, the letters, the negotiation. Calm and factual gets better results with the IRS than aggressive promises, every single time. The work is supported by written follow up we share with our clients throughout the process.

Then we make sure it doesn’t happen again — with clean, accurate books, payroll taxes funded on time, and enough cash‑flow visibility that you can spot a problem while it’s still small.

That last part is the difference between a firm and a service that disappears when the payment clears. We are a full-service accounting firm and experienced on both sides of the fence. The resolution side with the IRS and the resolution side with the clients root-problem that caused the problem in the first place. We can help resolve both.

What This Actually Changes in Your Life

Business owners talk to us about balances and notices. What they really want back is something else.

  • You open your mail again. That stack you have been walking past on the counter stops being a threat.

  • You sleep. The three in the morning math sessions stop, because you know the number and you know the plan.

  • You can make a decision again. Hire, buy the equipment, take the bigger job, because you know what your cash actually has to cover.

  • You get to go back to running the business you started, instead of managing a crisis you did not see coming.

What It Takes to Get Started

Less than people expect. Bring whatever IRS notices you have, even if some are unopened. Bring your last filed return if you know where it is. Tell me roughly what is missing and roughly what you owe. If you do not know, that is fine, because pulling your transcripts is our job and part of our services.

We start with a conversation, not a contract. We will tell you what we see, what it will likely take, and what it will cost, before you commit to anything. If we do not think you need us, we will say that too.
